ITV DELIGHTS FANS WITH RETURN OF HUGELY POPULAR DRAMA STARRING GAME OF THRONES ACTOR

ITV has announced the return of one its most gripping crime thrillers, which features Game of Thrones star, Gemma Whelan.

After two hugely successful series, The Tower is returning to the channel and will see the actress, who played Yara Greyjoy in the HBO smash-hit, reprising her role DS Sarah Collins.

We haven’t seen Sarah since 2023, when series two of the gritty cop drama pulled her into a shocking cold case, where she once again had to deal with PC Lizzie Adams, whose preference for protocol was seriously tested.

ITV has today (Monday, July 01, 2024) confirmed that The Tower will be back for a third series and will kick off with Sarah being called to investigate the stabbing of a teenage boy.

The upcoming series, which will return to ITV1 and ITVX between July to September and is entitled The Tower 3: Gallowstree Lane, is based on author Kate London’s third novel, and is adapted by screenwriter Patrick Harbinson (Homeland, Fearless, 24).

Commenting on the commissioning of new series of the show, Patrick said: "We’re delighted to be filming a third series of The Tower. Damien and I are very grateful to Polly Hill and ITV for the early commission. Gallowstree Lane has a high-stakes drugs and gangs storyline with Jimmy and Emmett’s characters taking major roles. Sarah and Lizzie have gripping and heart-breaking stories too, as the drama of Portland Tower comes full circle. I firmly believe series three will be our best yet."

Speaking ahead of the series' second season, Gemma teased plenty of drama for the future of the thriller, telling the Radio Times: "Well, I think you could possibly hope to see all of those things [come to] fruit further. The seeds are planted for a good reason in season two and [we're] always very lucky to continue growing those stories.

"As for Sarah, perhaps her romantic life is explored further and how that plays out against her police work and how she tries to find a work-life balance.

"As Patrick is incredible at doing, he weaves all of our storylines together so that there’s quite the denouement. I don’t want to say 'more of the same', but a very considered and brilliant continuation of the seeds we’d planted in season two and lots of twists and turns."

The HBO star will be joined on the show by Tahirah Sharif – who was BAFTA-nominated for her role as PC Lizzie Adama for the first series, Jimmy Akingbola, who reprises his role as DC Steve Bradshaw and Emmett J Scanlan, who will be back as DI Kieran Shaw.
