RIDLEY SCOTT SAYS HE WAS 'NEVER ASKED' ABOUT DIRECTING “ALIEN ”SEQUEL: 'I SHOULD HAVE' MADE IT

“I’m the author of two franchises. Most directors in Hollywood — certainly, let’s say, at my level — don’t let that stuff go,” Scott said

Ridley Scott is sharing his regret over not directing the sequel to Alien.

The 86-year-old director said he was never asked to direct the sequels to his breakthrough films Alien and Blade Runner.

“I was slow out the starting gate. I mean, I should have done the sequels to Alien and to Blade Runner,” Scott recently told Vanity Fair. “You change over the years. At that time, I didn’t want to go through it again. So Jim Cameron came in and then David Fincher on Alien 3.”  (James Cameron's Aliens released in 1986, while Alien 3, directed by Fincher, opened in 1992.)

“I’m the author of two franchises. Most directors in Hollywood — certainly, let’s say, at my level — don’t let that stuff go,” he continued. “But I did Alien as my second movie, so I didn’t have much choice. And Blade Runner was my third movie. So, I had no choice because I had very tough partners. It was kind of ‘Welcome to Hollywood.’ ”

Scott said that shortly after the the films were released in the early 1980s he wasn't presented with the option of making the sequels. “I was never told or asked. You can imagine I wasn’t happy,” he added.

Scott's comments come after returning to direct Gladiator II — the hotly anticipated sequel to his 2000 epic Gladiator starring Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal and Denzel Washington.

Speaking of his earlier hit films, the director shared that he had initially intended to direct the long-awaited sequel to Blade Runner (1982) — however stepped aside to re-enter the Alien franchise and direct Prometheus (2012) instead, handing Dune director Denis Villeneuve the reigns instead.

Scott admitted he was also “regretful” over this decision, though he thinks Villeneuve “did a good job.”

In Gladiator II, Mescal, 28, plays the leading role of Lucius, son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and nephew of villain Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) in the original film as he fights in Rome's gladiator rings.

Scott teased of the film's plot a disrupted political atmosphere where “the leadership is in total chaos," telling VF, “We have demagogues — that’s a good word. The people who are in charge are out of their minds, and everyone is too afraid to contradict. That’s familiar ground right now.”
