JASON MRAZ TOLD FRIENDS NOT TO VOTE FOR HIM ON “DANCING WITH THE STARS” BECAUSE HE MISSED HIS CAT
In an interview with Jesse Tyler Ferguson for his 'Dinner’s on Me' podcast, the folk-pop musician also opened up about coming out as bisexual
Jason Mraz was missing someone special during his time on Dancing with the Stars.
In an interview with Jesse Tyler Ferguson on the actor's Dinner's On Me podcast, the "I'm Yours" singer, 47, spoke about trying to have his time on the 32nd season of the dance competition show cut short — so he could go home to his cat.
“Two or three weeks in, I realized I’m probably going to be here the whole time, and I’m terrified, and I have to cancel all my plans for the entire rest of the year, and I’m missing my cat terribly,” he said of time on the ABC show, where he teamed up with dance partner Daniella Karagch. “I start telling my friends, ‘Stop voting for me!’”

At one point, Mraz even told producers that he was "good" and was ready to depart the show. But ultimately he ended up being first runner-up, while Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness star Xochitl Gomez won.
“Having made it all the way to the very end, made it to the buzzer, I look back and laugh and think, ‘Well, maybe if I’d actually given a s---!’” he said.
Mraz continued: “So, I would do it all over again if I could, and I would try really hard.”
Elsewhere in the conversation, the "Make It Mine" musician opened up about his hesitancy to come out as a teenager.
"In the '90s, being gay was like [the] punchline of a joke, and I didn't want to be the punchline of a joke," Mraz said, adding how he decided during that time to keep "my nose down" and figure out "ways I could instead get out and see the world one day."
He also explained how growing up in Virginia also influenced his thought process at the time when it came to his sexuality.
"I still took with me the conservative street that I grew up on, and that was very hard to ignore or to break out of," Mraz said. "I was very shy and and scared of what my family would say, or what my hometown would think or just whatever."
While touching on his fears and the judgment he experienced, the folk-pop singer noted that he didn't "want to throw anybody under the bus."
"My parents are very supportive," Mraz added. "I love them very much."
"The Remedy" hitmaker revealed that he'd had sexual experiences with men in a 2018 interview with Billboard, even while dating Christina Carano, whom he married in 2015 and ultimately divorced in 2023.
Mraz has since remained open about his journey exploring his sexuality.
